Les petits métiers
Tackling Youth Unemployment in Cameroon’s Fashion Industry
The initiative “Les petits métiers” expands opportunities for youth in Cameroon’s growing fashion industry, providing comprehensive training in tailoring, design, and business management, with a strong emphasis on gender equality.
Launched in spring 2024, the initiative “Les petits métiers” expands opportunities for youth in Cameroon’s growing fashion industry, providing comprehensive training in tailoring, design, and business management, with a strong emphasis on gender equality. Organized by the Afro Fashion Association in collaboration with Laba Douala Fine Arts Academy e Fondazione Aurora, “Les petits métiers” sets itself apart by combining hands-on training with online learning opportunities with Italian fashion experts and companies. Following the program, participants can pursue careers with local and international companies or join a newly established cooperative to launch their own businesses.
“This project is not just about skills training,” explains Afro Fashion Association founder Michelle Ngonmo; “it’s about empowering young people, enhancing the concept of craftsmanship, and fostering a thriving fashion industry in Cameroon. The collaboration with Italian experts promotes cultural exchange, while the focus on cooperatives ensures participants have a sustainable path to success.”
