Les petits métiers

Supporting training and (self)employment in the fashion industry

The initiative aims to improve employment opportunities for young people in Cameroon within the fashion sector, supporting youth employment, the promotion of inclusive growth, and dignified work.

Launched in spring 2024, the initiative “Les petits métiers” improves employment opportunities for young people in Cameroon within the fashion sector. The project, developed between Milan, Italy and Douala, Cameroon, seeks to contribute to youth employment, the promotion of inclusive growth, and dignified work. It is co-financed by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) – Mission in Italy under the A.MI.CO. Grants 2024 initiative with the support of the Italian Development Cooperation, and organized by the Afro Fashion Association in collaboration with Laba Douala Fine Arts Academy and Fondazione Aurora.

The training program is based on nine modules focused on fashion professions: sewing, pattern making, drawing, draping, beading, design, business management and embroidery. Through this comprehensive curriculum, 30 young Cameroonians will enhance their skills in tailoring and accessory production. The project also includes the establishment of a cooperative to further support their career development.

“This project is not just about skills training,” explains Afro Fashion Association founder Michelle Ngonmo; “it’s about empowering young people, enhancing the concept of craftsmanship, and fostering a thriving fashion industry in Cameroon. The collaboration with Italian experts promotes cultural exchange, while the focus on cooperatives ensures participants have a sustainable path to success.”
